Renaissance

Description of the Renaissance style in the interior:

RENAISSANCE STYLE or RENAISSANCE STYLE - a look at antiquity through the eyes of the Middle Ages. This manifested itself, first of all, in the desire for clarity and vitality both in architecture, sculpture, painting, and in the arrangement of one's own home. The Renaissance appears before us in its grandeur with graceful palaces and cathedrals.

The Renaissance style in the interior strikes with the monumentality of spatial effects, the splendor of marble stairs, and the richness of decorative decoration. Living rooms and bedrooms of the nobility were furnished with expensive furniture made in the spirit of antiquity. The color scheme of the Renaissance is soft, the halftones pass into each other, there are no contrasts, complete harmony. Nothing catches the eye. In such a room, a soft, intimate, comfortable and soothing mood is created.

Renaissance walls: The main materials or their imitation are smooth stone, marble and sandstone. Various variations of plaster are used on one wall, leaving the surface smooth. Widely used in renaissance wall painting.

When decorating walls in the Renaissance style, use velvet, brocade or embossed leather. Relevant for the Renaissance style of the Renaissance would be niches in the walls, which you can decorate with frescoes. Bronze figurines will look good in such niches. The presence of carved wood as a wall decor is still relevant, but unlike Gothic, lighter and smoother patterns are inherent in the Renaissance, as well as the use of wood not only of dark species.

Renaissance ceiling: If the height allows, then it is more correct to do it in the form of vaults. In general, the design of the Renaissance ceiling imitates stone or marble. They also use multi-level ceilings, placing Renaissance paintings in the center. In general, painting is given special importance, not only in the form of paintings, but also in the form of ornaments. A striking touch of design in the Renaissance style will be elegant gilded stucco. The second version of the ceiling is coffered (either made of natural wood or painted and decorated)

Renaissance floor: It is more correct to use ceramics imitating stone or marble. Carpets are used to soften the perception. If you choose parquet as a floor parquet, choose the type of wood for the overall interior (oak, walnut, exotic species), and it is better to choose a large solid board for the interior in the Renaissance style.

Renaissance furniture: Renaissance furniture is characterized by a clear form, clear construction and numerous architectural elements. Gilding can be used in its decoration. The main piece of furniture was a chest-cassone - a household chest, decorated with inlay from different types of wood, painting and gilding. The cupboards are covered with a relief copying the architecture and sculpture of that time. Will be very relevant in the interior of the Renaissance such items as a sideboard, desk, secretary. At that time, a folding table with retractable legs was invented. The chairs are upholstered in leather, velvet or bright brocade. Well complement the interior of the Renaissance metal openwork chairs.

Renaissance decor items: Use antique paintings in the interior, borrowing the tones from these canvases when painting the walls. Aged pieces of furniture designed in this style, wrought iron furniture, ivory accessories, candelabra, cassone chests (decorated with carvings, inlays or paintings) will help to embody the Renaissance style. Of course, one cannot do without candelabra, massive, perhaps even forged.

Pro Tips:

1. Deep perspective, proportionality, harmony of forms are the mandatory requirements of the interior in the Renaissance style. The construction of a symmetrical composition starts from one central element, which acts as the axis of this symmetry. Such an element can be a fireplace or a table.

2. When creating a Renaissance interior, be consistent and pay attention to even the smallest details. Let your paintings be copies of the famous paintings of the Renaissance by Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Raphael Santi, Michelangelo Buonarroti and other masters. Often, designers depart from the style, adding elements, pieces of furniture from other eras and a completely different mood, which is why the image is lost, and the style becomes inexpressive.

3. The Renaissance style in the interior is largely based on ancient images. Complete the interior with columns and pilasters, use grotesques developed on the basis of ornaments. Arabesques, braids, cartouches, festoons, garlands, lion heads, griffins, cupids will also complement the style. The Renaissance style is rich and varied for decoration, which allows it to be used in rooms for various purposes.

4. An additional touch of the Renaissance style in the interior can be furniture decoration with plant compositions in the form of vines, leaves, wreaths, which was very popular in the motives of the ancient Romans, from whom the Renaissance style took inspiration.

5. The decoration of the windows of the rooms, made in the Renaissance style, are rich draperies with lambrequins. The fabric from which lambrequins are made is always smooth, and appliqué or silk embroidery serves as decoration. Twisted cords are used to finish the draperies.

6. The most common type of applied art in Renaissance Italy was majolica - ceramics made using a special technique. Majolica tableware was distinguished by picturesque decor: medallions with portraits, plot compositions, heraldic signs. Often an ordinary dish simply turned into a picture. Also during the Renaissance, the porcelain boom began. Use all this in your interior.

7. A special touch in the interior of the Renaissance can be the use of Venetian glass. No wonder Italy kept his secret so diligently.

History of the Renaissance style:

The Renaissance or the Renaissance, as a style in art, originated in Italy, in the 13th century, which replaced the culture of the Middle Ages and preceded the culture of modern times. It later spread to all of Europe. Approximate chronological framework of the era of the XIV-XVI centuries. The Renaissance style got its name from the manifestation of interest in the ancient heritage of mankind, the humanities and the art of the ancient world.

The background for the development of the Renaissance was several moments. The secular nature of culture and its anthropocentrism (that is, interest, first of all, in a person and his activities) is increasing. The church no longer acts as the main customer of art objects, wealth and luxury become symbols of the nobility. A luxurious house with rich decoration becomes a necessary attribute of the high social position of its owner. Among the orders of architects there are palaces and country villas of influential people.

Also, the great geographical discoveries of that time played a role in the development of mankind. In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered America, in 1498 the Portuguese Vasco de Gama laid a sea route to India, in 1519 Magellan made the first trip around the world. Technological progress and scientific knowledge also contribute to this.

In art and architecture, symmetry, proportion, geometry and the order of the components are of particular importance, as evidenced by the surviving examples of Roman architecture. The complex proportion of medieval buildings is replaced by an orderly arrangement of columns, pilasters and lintels, asymmetrical outlines are replaced by a semicircle of an arch, a hemisphere of a dome, niches, and aedicules.

From the Gothic style, the desire for excessive decorativeness was inherited, which significantly distinguishes it from the architecture of the ancient world. The upwardly directed gothic lines are contrasted with the horizontal articulations of the building. Roofs become flat, spiers give way to domes. The overall proportions of the building become more squat, based on the principle of the "golden section".

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is a gem of Renaissance architecture. No less beautiful are the Medici Chapel, Palazzo Vendramin Calergi, St. Peter's Cathedral, St. Mary's Cathedral, the Church of Santa Maria Novella and other Renaissance treasures. Renaissance architecture experienced its greatest flourishing in Italy, leaving behind two monument cities: Florence and Venice. Great architects worked on the creation of buildings there - Filippo Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti, Donato Bramante, Giorgio Vasari and many others.

The entire history of the development of the new style during the XV - XVI centuries. can be divided into three main periods.

1420 - 1500 This is the period of the early Renaissance style. The leading architect of this period was F. Brunelleschi (1377 - 1446), and the main center was Florence.

This is followed by the heyday of the Renaissance style (starting from 1500). D. Bramante (1444 - 1514) becomes the leading architect, and the center moves to Rome.

The last and relatively short period belongs to the late Renaissance (1540 - 1580). The leading architect of this time was the great sculptor and painter Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475 - 1564).

The period of the late Italian Renaissance laid the foundation for a completely new direction in art - the Baroque style in both its manifestations - both dynamic and classical.
